Mr. Gossett is the one being disingenuous (or perhaps misinformed) in his reaction to those who are unhoused not seeking services. What they need is shelter and the demand cannot be met. HELP is an awesome County department who can sometimes help with rent assistance but in general there are simply not enough emergency beds or affordable housing options in Oshkosh. There is no help inside the Orrin King building for that. Oshkosh/Winnebago County needs to look at the Housing First model which has been used successfully for decades i cities all over the US to house those who are difficult to help. It’s almost impossible to find rent under $900 in Oshkosh now and that leaves a large group of people without a safe place to be. We can do better than the “move along” policy used by the police.
